Communities & Conservation

Restoration with the People of the Territory

Since 2020, we have planted 77,400 native trees across 4 communities: Rayanpata, Yanahuaylla, Unuraqui, and Saqllo — all located in Calca, Cusco, Peru.

Communities participate actively in planting days, forest care, and the monitoring of restored areas. Our approach is not based solely on biological function, but also on human rights and the rights of all living beings across the territory.

In the Andean worldview, plants, rivers, and mountains — in short, everything that surrounds us — are considered part of the family and entities with a life of their own. As such, we have a duty to care for and protect them.

More than 500 permanent volunteers support the project’s activities, strengthening a network of civic participation committed to the restoration of the territory.

Restoration also strengthens the cultural bond with the mountain and the transmission of knowledge between generations.

Generating income for women in communities

20% of the trees planted will be native species such as tara and molle. The fruits of these trees are used in both industry and gastronomy. Women from each community will take part in the care of the trees and, once they reach productive age, will be integrated into existing business supply chains in the Sacred Valley, enabling them to sell the fruits of the molle and tara.

Conservation

Protecting the forests that remainn

Alongside tree planting, the project drives actions to protect remnants of native forest and reduce threats to mountain ecosystems.

Development of the Reporta Incendios App

Reporta Incendios a tool that will allow the inhabitants of Calca to report wildfire outbreaks in real time and improve prevention across the territory. How it works: the user opens the application, takes a photograph, geotags it, and adds any additional information. This is then sent to Telegram and WhatsApp groups made up of wildfire brigades and the authorities of Calca. The aim is to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.
